Raising children is stressful enough. Raising children and attending college is almost unthinkable, but it is possible. I had a 3-month-old daughter and 1-year-old son when I decided to go back to school and complete my first masters degree. Money was scarce and I was nursing my daughter who refused to drink from bottles. Fortunately, my then husband and mother could baby sit nearly all the time.

The Power Of Parenting

As I watched my daughter climb the steps to receive her high school diploma, it was hard to believe that just a little over a year earlier she was destined to be a high school dropout. Failing in four of her classes and doing nothing to improve, there was no way she was going to graduate from high school.

As I perched on a wobbly chair, in the bright sunlight among hundreds of other proud parents, I started thinking back on the remarkable change that had taken place with my daughter. After the graduation ceremony, the vice-principal walked up to me. The first words out of his mouth were, “I never thought she’d make it.” Even he had given up on her!

It seems like practically everyone lives online nowadays. So many people only visit life and live online. The online community is only growing bigger and bigger every day. I recently watched a commercial talking about the importance of keeping a close eye on your children. People think that because they are in their rooms that they are safe, but the truth is if they have access to the internet, they can meet more people in five minutes than you probably have met in your entire lifetime.

I ran across a video that sparked my interest and I want to share my thoughts with you. I’ll briefly review the contents of the one minute clip from “Katie Couric’s Notebook,” which airs on ABC Nightly News.

Essentially, her musings are based upon the alarmingly high number of babies and toddlers that are consuming television, before they’re developmentally able to process what they’re seeing. What about your precious little ones? How much TV do they consume on a regular basis? What are they watching? Is it healthy? It’s important to know.
