You are your child’s caregiver and protector. When divorce rears it’s ugly head, you’ve got to be sure your children are buffered as much as possible. Here are some key ideas to consider to be sure that occurs.

You’ll never read any words from my pen that indicate that divorce is just “jolly good fun.” It isn’t. It’s painful. Nobody on this earth thinks “Gosh, wouldn’t it just be great to get a divorce?” No, we’d slog thru mud up to our necks to avoid it.

When our family members are well, we usually do not think about what may happen in the future. As baby boomers age, they will become the largest group of elderly that our nation has ever had. And, their parents are aging as well. As a result of these two realities most families will be caring for aging loved ones.

The Challenge – Family members do not anticipate and prepare for being caregivers. We’re too busy with jobs, children and other responsibilities. Our parents seem to have an ageless quality about them. We live with a certain sense of denial about the aging of our loved ones and what their needs might be.

Remember this old joke? It takes place in the Garden of Eden.

Eve, looks at Adam and asks, “Do you love me, Adam?”

Adam raises his eyebrows and replies, “Who else?”

Who else, indeed? So is the reality for the “only child“. From our earliest memories, we were aware of having the “exclusive contract“. The one that states that we are “it“. The only one to take care of our aging parents.

What a role to be cast in. Of course, we want our parents to live a long time. Then again, we can’t kid
ourselves. With aging comes physical decline. Sometimes cognitive impairment. And emotional problems.
