Owen Egerton has compiled a book of small stories in “How Best to Avoid Dying.” I have to say that I had mixed feelings as I read through some of the stories. It is very difficult to describe my feelings about them as they had the strangest affect on me. I was very disturbed by many of them, but something about them compelled me to read on. I don’t think a book has ever had quite that affect on me before. The author is an excellent writer and definitely knows how to draw a reader in.

Reed diffusers began as an alternative to scented candles. A non burning choice for those who didn’t care for the hassle of a candle. Here are a couple of reasons why diffusers are still popular, and not showing signs of letting up.

  • Safety is still the main reason why reed diffusers are selling well. There is no issue of leaving a candle burning, no messy clean up, no trimming of wicks, and you never have to hunt for that candle snuffer again.

According to the latest results released by the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills (or OFSTED) 4% of childminders, nurseries and creche facilities were deemed as inadequate for inspections carried out between April 2006 and March 2007.

The good news of course is that 96% of childcare providers inspected were deemed as adequate or better with 3% rated as outstanding, 54% good and 39% satisfactory.

However for the 4% of childcare providers in the Getting on Well: Enjoying, Achieving and Contributing report who were judged to provide inadequate childcare some of the reasons citied for their rating included:

Packing a healthy child lunch your children will enjoy day in and day out certainly isn’t an easy task.

It’s hard to keep coming up with fresh ideas for packed lunches for the 20 or so school days there are in a month. No wonder we often rely on the same old lunch recipe favorites.

Here are a few of my favorite kid lunch box ideas. I’m sure you’ve heard some of them before but I’m hoping you’ll find a few new ideas to inspire you.

    Change the bread
For a change from everyday sandwich use soft tortillas for wraps, bagels, English muffins, pita pockets or fresh baked rolls.

June is finally here! Where did the past months go? Now that it is beginning to get hot outside (for most of us), I have spent a lot of time outdoors. Not only that, but I have spent a lot of time out shopping. And you know what I have discovered, no matter where I go in town, I can usually get a better deal online - not to mention, saving money on gas! I just recently ordered a new custom sofa online and saved hundreds of dollars (even with shipping costs). And I have finally gotten my stuff moved into my new scrapbooking office and wanted to get some new vertical storage. And guess where I found the cheapest ones - online! (I chose the Cropper Hopper Vertical Paper Holders).

No, I haven’t gone off the deep end. And yes, battling brothers and sisters can be a real pain. But sibling rivalry can also be a terrific training ground for teaching good problem solving, if you know what to do.

Being an effective problem solver is one of life’s great skills.

By making good problem solving a part of your children’s skills, you will help increase their confidence, self-esteem, and wise decision making. They will get along better with friends, do better in school. And, for you, this makes being a parent a lot easier and more enjoyable.

Pregnancy miscarriage or spontaneous abortion is the loss of a pregnancy, on its own, which occurs in nearly 20% of all confirmed pregnancies. This usually occurs before 20-24 weeks of the pregnancy but it is most common during the first 12 weeks. When a pregnancy miscarriage occurs, the fetus, placenta and the amniotic sac are expelled by the body.

Today, Tyler R. Tichelaar of Reader Views is interviewing Dennis M. Powers, author of “Sentinel of the Seas: Life and Death at the Most Dangerous Lighthouse Ever Built.”

Dennis Powers is an avid historian of nautical life. He is the author of “Treasure Ship” and “The Raging Sea.” His new book, “Sentinel of the Seas,” is about lighthouses and more particularly St. George Reef Lighthouse located off the California coast. He spent five years meticulously researching this subject.

Tyler: Hello, Dennis. Thank you for joining me today. I’d like to start our conversation by asking how you became so interested in writing this particular book.

Often times planning a baby shower can be quite a hassle. You need to determine who will host the shower, who to invite, where & when the shower will take place, and what activities should be planned, what food should be served and what decorations/favors are best. Let’s tackle these issues in order.

Anyone can host the shower; however it should be someone who is close to the mother-to-be or a family member.

All of the mom’s friends and family should be invited. If the shower is a surprise, you need to make sure everyone knows, so no one “spills the beans”.
